When a couple has viable surplus embryos after the embryo transfer, they will be frozen at Sunfert and kept for later use. The advantages of freezing embryos are when an embryo transfer cycle did not yield a pregnancy or for family expansion in the near future. The couple need not again go through the same process of ovarian stimulation to generate embryos because of the extra embryos available from the previous cycle. The idea behind embryo banking is similar to financial banking. Another advantage of embryo freezing is when the woman is having high risk of Ovarian Hyper-stimulation Syndrome (OHSS) a condition that can be fatal to the woman if she is not treated properly.
Surplus embryos can be frozen from two cell stage until blastocyst stage and there are two different ways to freeze embryos and blastocysts. Slow freeze and rapid freeze are the two techniques to freeze embryos, whereby the former one is more common.
