Fertility Profiling

Tests / Assessments

Fertility Profiling has been designed to assess the fertility potential of couples who would like to be pregnant at some time in the future. The tests performed will show whether a woman is producing eggs and the health of her ovaries. It will also predict if the woman is going to develop problems with egg production in the near future. Anatomical problems, such as ovarian cysts and abnormalities within the womb, will be detected. Importantly, it will be possible to assess whether the Fallopian tubes are open or have, perhaps, been damaged in the past.

Some women wish to undergo this test even though they are not currently in a relationship but wish to assess their fertility potential for the future and know how to balance the conflicting priorities of professional career and their desire for a family. If the test shows that the fertility potential is lower than expected, the woman may opt for a procedure called egg freezing which allows her to freeze her eggs for future use, and hence preserve her fertility.

Male fertility is also assessed by performing a semen analysis. This will identify the numbers, movement and normality of sperm present and will immediately identify a potential male problem. Some men with extremely low sperm count may opt to freeze several samples of their sperm as a back up incase the quality of the sperm deteriorates further.

Fertility Profiling also includes detailed history and examination to identify medical, or lifestyle, factors which could have an influence on fertility.

The best time to perform Fertility Profiling is during the onset of the woman’s period (usually Day 2 or Day 3) because the timing for the hormone tests, and procedures to test the Fallopian tubes, is critical. On this day, the following tests will be performed: blood tests, ultrasound scan, semen analysis, if the male partner is present. Sexually transmitted disease screening may be offered is there is a reason to suspect this problem may be present.

Depending on the findings, the woman is then seen again on Day 10 of her cycle for an x ray test (hysterosalpingography – HSG) to assess tubal patency. The outcome of HSG would be known on the same day and a follow-up consultation will take place at this time to discuss the results and their significance.
