What is Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI)?

IUI is a simple fertility treatment that increases the chances of pregnancy by placing prepared sperm directly into the uterus during ovulation for natural fertilisation.

At Sunfert, we carefully select and prepare the healthiest sperm from either the spouse or a donor, and time the insemination to give our patients the best chance of success.

How is IUI different from IVF?

IUIIVF

Who Can Benefit from (IUI)?

IUI is suitable for younger couples facing certain fertility challenges, such as:

  • mild male factor infertility (low sperm motility or count)
  • unexplained infertility after trying naturally for 6 to 12 months
  • ovulation disorders, where timed insemination can improve success

When Should A Patient Consider IUI?

Timing is crucial for IUI success. At Sunfert, we recommend IUI if:

  • patient have been trying to conceive naturally for 12 months without success
  • patient’s fertility assessment indicates mild male factor issues or ovulation irregularities
  • patient prefer trying simpler fertility options before moving on to more advanced treatments like IVF

How is IUI Performed At Sunfert?

It can be done in 5 steps.

Step 1: Fertility Evaluation

During a fertility assessment, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation for both partners to identify potential factors affecting fertility and guide a personalised treatment plan.

  • Both Partners: Review of medical history, reproductive history, and previous fertility treatment outcomes.
  • Female Partner: Hormonal profile testing, ovarian reserve assessment, and evaluation of the pelvic organs (uterus, ovaries, cervix, fallopian tubes).
  • Male Partner: Semen analysis to assess sperm quality and reproductive potential.

Step 2: Ovulation Monitoring

Using ultrasound and hormone tests to determine the optimal insemination day

Step 3: Sperm Preparation

Semen sample is washed and concentrated to select the healthiest sperm

Step 4: Insemination

Prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus using a thin, flexible catheter

Step 5: Post-procedure Guidance

Patients can rest briefly and usually can resume normal daily activities immediately.

We provide clear instructions and continuous support throughout the entire process to ensure comfort and confidence.

Body Mass Index calculator

Being overweight or underweight can reduce fertility, so it is important to keep your body weight within the normal healthy range.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is an indication of your body weight and can be calculated by dividing weight by height. You should aim for a BMI of between 20 and 25, as this will optimise your chances of conception.

Woman’s BMI below 19

Even in these modern times, nature knows best. If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

Being underweight

If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

BMI’s greater than 30

This can reduce fertility by 50%. Pregnancy for women with a 30+ BMI is often associated with problems such as maternal diabetes, high blood pressure, big babies and increased risk of caesarean section.
