SpermMobil

An innovative treatment to improve sperm motility and fertility potential for couples trying to conceive.

Helpful tools

What is SpermMobil?

At Sunfert, we use SpermMobil, a specialised medium to activate sperm in the laboratory. When applied to a sample of completely immotile sperm, it stimulates the energy reserves of live sperm, allowing them to regain motility. This makes it easier for our embryologists to distinguish viable sperm from non-viable sperm.

Hence, SpermMobil helps us to select healthy sperm for fertilisation. It is particularly valuable for sperm retrieved surgically from the testes or epididymis (TESE, MESA), or in samples with critically low or zero motility.

By enabling couples to use their own sperm, SpermMobil increases the chances of fertilising eggs, supporting personalised IVF treatment and maximising the potential for a successful pregnancy.

Who Can Benefit from SpermMobil?

SpermMobil is particularly helpful for men experiencing:

  • low sperm motility or weak sperm movement
  • previous IVF cycles with poor fertilisation rates
  • high levels of sperm DNA fragmentation, which can affect embryo quality
  • age-related declines in sperm quality

At Sunfert, we assess each patient individually. We often recommend SpermMobil alongside other fertility treatments to maximise your chances of a successful pregnancy.

How is SpermMobil Applied at Sunfert?

Step 1: Semen Collection

At Sunfert, semen collection is usually performed through masturbation in a private room at our fertility centre. Alternatively, patients may collect the necessary kit from our nursing team and provide the sample at home, in a more comfortable and familiar environment.

For patients who are unable to produce a sample naturally or have critically low sperm counts, semen can also be obtained surgically through TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) or MESA (Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration). These procedures allow us to retrieve sperm directly from the testes or epididymis.

Step 2: Sperm Activation with SpermMobil

Our embryology team will apply SpermMobil on the sperm sample to activate the sperm and identify those viable sperm for later use on fertilisation.

Step 3: Sperm Injection

Inject the selected viable sperm carefully into the egg cytoplasm with a specialised microinjection tool.

Frequently Asked Questions About SpermMobil

Question #1: What is SpermMobil and how does it work?

  • At Sunfert, SpermMobil is a specialised laboratory medium that activates immotile sperm, stimulating their energy reserves so live sperm regain motility.
  • This allows our embryologists to select the healthiest sperm for fertilising eggs during IVF, improving fertilisation rate and embryo quality.

Question #2: Is SpermMobil safe, and does it affect my sperm?

  • Yes. SpermMobil is completely safe and used exclusively in the laboratory.
  • It does not damage sperm, instead it identifies and activates live sperm, helping our embryologists choose the most viable sperm for fertilisation among the sample, supporting better embryo development and implantation potential.

The Biological Clock

This tool indicates:

  • Natural conception per month if you have no fertility issues
  • IVF success rate at the same age
  • When to seek help after months of unsuccessful attempts

If you are concerned at any stage – we recommend booking a doctor appointment or a free nurse consultation. The sooner you make a plan the better your chances in the long term.

When to seek advice early

  • If you have polycystic ovaries, endometriosis, or have been through a cancer diagnosis; we recommend you get in touch quickly so we can talk you through all your options and give you the greatest possible chance of success.
  • If you’re a single woman considering motherhood in the future; it’s best to approach us early and consider egg freezing as this can be an option for you while you have a higher ovarian reserve and healthier eggs.

Body Mass Index calculator

Being overweight or underweight can reduce fertility, so it is important to keep your body weight within the normal healthy range.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is an indication of your body weight and can be calculated by dividing weight by height. You should aim for a BMI of between 20 and 25, as this will optimise your chances of conception.

Woman’s BMI below 19

Even in these modern times, nature knows best. If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

Being underweight

If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

BMI’s greater than 30

This can reduce fertility by 50%. Pregnancy for women with a 30+ BMI is often associated with problems such as maternal diabetes, high blood pressure, big babies and increased risk of caesarean section.
