Key Information About Storage
At Sunfert, we follow Malaysian Medical Council guidelines for storing sperm, eggs, and embryos.
Here’s what you need to know:
Storage Duration:
- Your sperm, eggs, or embryos can be stored for up to 5 years initially, with the option to extend for another 5 years by submitting a written request.
- Continuing your annual storage payments after the first 5 years will be treated as a request to extend.
10-Year Limit:
- After 10 years of storage, if you haven’t arranged to transfer your material to another country with different storage rules, we will need to safely dispose of it.
Start Date for Embryos:
- The storage period for embryos is calculated from the date the sperm or eggs were first frozen, not when the embryos were created.
- Example: If embryos were created in 2020 using sperm frozen in 2018, their 10-year expiry is in 2028.
Expiry & Disposal:
- If extended storage is not requested or the clinic is unable to reach you, your frozen sperm, eggs, embryos, or ovarian tissue will be discarded once they expire.
- The clinic has up to 6 months to complete disposal, but the material cannot be used after the expiry date.
This approach ensures your reproductive material is managed safely, while giving you clear timelines to make decisions about extended storage.
Keep Your Contact Details Updated
We want to make sure you stay informed about your stored reproductive material.
- Our Sunfert team will usually reach out once a year to confirm whether you wish to continue storing your sperm, eggs, embryos, or tissue.
- If we are unable to contact you for 2 consecutive years, your stored material may be discarded.
Storage will also be terminated under the following circumstances:
- In the event of death or loss of decision-making ability
