What is Reproductive Surgery?
Reproductive surgery refers to minimally invasive surgical procedures performed to treat reproductive conditions affecting the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, or surrounding pelvic structures that may impair fertility, help to restore fertility, and improve patients’ IVF success rates.
It plays an important role in helping women overcome certain fertility challenges.
At Sunfert, we combine advanced surgical techniques with personalised fertility care to improve the patient’s chances of achieving a healthy pregnancy.
Whether the patient is experiencing irregular periods, recurrent miscarriage, pelvic pain, or difficulty conceiving, our fertility specialists will carefully assess whether reproductive surgery may benefit the patient.
The main goals of reproductive surgery are to:
- correct structural abnormalities of the uterus
- remove growths such as fibroids or polyps
- treat endometriosis or pelvic adhesions
- improve the chances of natural conception or IVF success
- reduce miscarriage risk linked to uterine abnormalities
At Sunfert, we prioritise fertility-preserving techniques, ensuring the patient’s reproductive health is protected while addressing the underlying condition.
Types of Reproductive Surgery for Females
There are 2 main types of minimally invasive reproductive surgery for females available at Sunfert:
- Hysteroscopy
- Laparoscopy
Both procedures are performed using small instruments and advanced imaging technology, allowing faster recovery and minimal scarring.
What is Hysteroscopy and Laparoscopy?
Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows us to examine the inside of the uterus using a thin, lighted instrument called a hysteroscope, inserted through the vagina and cervix, hence no external incisions are required.
Laparoscopy is a keyhole surgery performed through small incisions in the abdomen. A thin camera (laparoscope) is inserted to examine the pelvic organs, including uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and the surrounding pelvic structures. It allows both diagnosis and treatment in the same procedure.
The Difference Between Hysteroscopy and Laparoscopy
| Aspect | Hysteroscopy | Laparoscopy |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Detect and treat uterine abnormalities | Diagnose and treat pelvic conditions |
| Area Examined | Inside the uterus | Outside uterus and pelvic organs |
| Surgery Method | Through the cervix (no incision) | Small abdominal incisions |
| Common Conditions Treated | Polyps, fibroids, uterine septum | Endometriosis, adhesions, tubal blockage |
| Recovery Time | Usually shorter | Slightly longer but still minimally invasive |

Is female reproductive surgery painful?
The procedure is usually performed under sedation or light anaesthesia, so patients do not feel pain during surgery.
After the procedure, mild cramping or discomfort similar to period pain may occur but typically resolves within a few days with simple medication.
How long does recovery take after reproductive surgery?
Recovery depends on the type of procedure. Most patients recover from hysteroscopy within 1 to 3 days, while laparoscopy may require around 1 to 2 weeks for full recovery.
As both are minimally invasive, downtime is generally shorter compared to traditional surgery.
Can reproductive surgery improve natural pregnancy chances?
Yes, in many cases. If infertility is caused by conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, adhesions, or blocked fallopian tubes, surgical treatment can improve reproductive function and increase the chances of natural conception.
Will I still need IVF after reproductive surgery?
It depends on your individual fertility condition, age, and medical history. Some patients may conceive naturally after surgery, while others may still require IVF for better success rates.
A fertility assessment helps determine the most suitable treatment pathway.
